Freddie Freeman, a former first baseman for the Atlanta Braves, has been playing brilliantly for the Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. He has often argued for World Series MVP, from memorable moments to outright dominance.
With the New York Yankees ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the tenth inning in Game 1, the heroics started. For a walk-off grand slam, Freeman hit an inside fastball from Nestor Cortes into the right field bleachers after Mookie Betts was purposefully walked to load the bases with two outs. That must have made Kirk Gibson proud. This was the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history, just for good measure.
In the third inning of Game 2, with the Dodgers leading 3-1, he hit a solo shot to put the team ahead 4-1 and won 4-2. It would be remarkable to hit two home runs in a single World Series spanning six or seven games. It is very spectacular to have home runs in back-to-back games, including a walk-off. Freeman wasn’t finished, though. Freeman scored two runs to put the Dodgers up in the bottom of the first.
In every game, the dude has hit a home run. In fact, since the final two games of the 2021 World Series, he has hit a home run in five consecutive World Series games. The extent to which he is outperforming the Yankees as a team, even outside of the long balls, is astounding. After hitting his third home run, Fox posted a graphic that contrasted his numbers with those of the Yankees.
He is surpassing them. He’s scored more runs. He’s seeing the ball so well that he’s even gone three games without striking out. The Yankees, however, have only managed to strike out 23 times. Freeman’s Hollywood-like events come during a year that was dominated by Shohei Ohtani’s entry on a playoff team, his first 50-50 season, and a World Series where the main attraction was that he would face Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
And given that Freeman spent the whole of the playoffs dealing with an ankle issue, it was totally unexpected. He wasn’t playing well while he was in the lineup and had missed games. Freeman was cutting as the World Series approached.219/.242/.219. He just had one RBI and no extra-base hits.
He is hitting.333/.385/1.250 with three home runs, seven RBIs, and a triple in three World Series games. The ankle appears to be well now.
Without Freeman, the Dodgers would not be in their current situation. If he doesn’t walk it off, the Yankees win Game 1. Without his two-run opening homer in Game 3, they would have knotted the score late in the game. This could easily change a 3-0 series lead into what might be a 2-1 deficit.
That’s what an MVP is. It’s not necessary for Braves supporters to rejoice over the Dodgers’ World Series victory. However, many people are undoubtedly pleased to see Freddie in the lead.
