The San Francisco Giants have fewer areas to work on heading into this offseason because, in addition to several seasoned veterans, two of their young players emerged as breakout stars and seem to be franchise cornerstones.

With Logan Webb at the top of the rotation and Matt Chapman firmly established at third base, the rise of Heliot Ramos and Tyler Fitzgerald has provided this team with more affordable building bricks that new baseball operations president Buster Posey can utilize going ahead.

However, the Giants still have certain needs to meet.

It’s obvious that this squad isn’t good enough to compete in their competitive NL West division and the National League overall after missing the playoffs for the third consecutive year.

Posey will have to identify players that have a direct influence on winning, and NBC Sports Bay Area’s Alex Pavlovic says they have a target in mind.

“It’s no secret that the Giants covet San Diego Padres shortstop Ha-Seong Kim, who will be a free agent …,” according to him.

The fascinating part is that the 2023 Gold Glove-winning shortstop missed his team’s playoff run after undergoing shoulder surgery in late September after being sidelined since August 20 due to what was characterized as shoulder inflammation.

He might not be able to return until the middle of next year due to the late surgical operation.

However, given the interest Pavlovic noted, it doesn’t appear that will have an impact on San Francisco’s choice to bring him in or not.

Since joining the San Diego Padres from South Korea ahead of the 2021 season on a four-year, $28 million contract, He-Seong Kim has played under current manager Bob Melvin and has improved every year.

Kim’s middle infield has grown much more packed after the Padres acquired Luis Arraez and started utilizing a middle infield combination of Jake Cronenworth at second base and Xander Bogaerts at shortstop.

The Giants are able to get the outstanding shortstop, who has a defensive bWAR of 7.4 and a slash line of.242/.326/.380 with 47 home runs and 200 RBI in his 540 Major League games, as a result of that, which probably keeps him from re-signing with San Diego.

Once free agency starts, it will be important to keep an eye on Kim because she will continue to be identified as someone San Francisco is interested in.
