During the course of this week, a couple of New Orleans Saints icons made progress toward being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During this time, sadly, the absurd debacle that was the omission of Dome Patrol from the Hall of Fame continued.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee narrowed down a list of 167 modern-period candidates for the Hall of Fame Class of 2025 to only fifty members on Wednesday. The list also included candidates from the contemporary era. There were three former Saints that made it to the top 50, including a legend who is considered to be among the best players in the history of the New Orleans franchise.
During the course of their illustrious careers, cornerback Eric Allen and defensive tackle Kevin Williams both made only brief visits to the city of New Orleans. A great 11 years were spent by Williams with the Vikings, and he also spent one year with the Seattle Seahawks, before he finished his career with the Saints in 2015.
From 1995 to 1997, Allen was a player in New Orleans for a total of three years. The Eagles were his team for the first seven years of his career, and after leaving New Orleans, he spent the final four years with the Raiders. During his three years with the Saints, Allen was selected for one Pro Bowl and prevented five passes from being thrown. Over the course of his 14-year career, he ended up with 54 interceptions and nine defensive touchdowns.
The third former Saint is by far the most accomplished of the three contenders for the Hall of Fame, and he is also one of the candidates with the most awards among the remaining fifty prospects.
