Deonte Banks, a cornerback for the New York Giants, has had a disappointing second season due to both external factors and his own actions.

Banks, who was selected by the Giants in the first round of the draft last year, has been asked to play cornerback with varying degrees of success. He leads all Giants cornerbacks with four touchdowns allowed, which is equal to his total from last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Among cornerbacks, he leads the club with five pass breakups, and among all positions, he has the greatest coverage rating at 131.5 (based on 100 or more snaps).

However, a more worrisome trend involving Banks has emerged, and that is his tendency to not fully commit to certain plays until the last whistle.

It all started when Giants defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Jerome Henderson voiced his displeasure with the second-year player’s “effort” on a 55-yard touchdown pass to CeeDee Lamb during the team’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

This past week, Banks’s effort was called into doubt on at least two plays; however, the following week, he responded with his best game of the year against the Seattle Seahawks and received rD.K. Metcalf.

Banks expressed uncertainty about his ability to complete the Hurts play to reporters following the game.

“Sometimes when you’re in that moment, you just think like, ‘Nah,'” Banks remarked, but he still believes he might have succeeded. “However, I believe I was able to make a tackle.”

The play was clearly one that the CB should have made, as Henderson soared into the frame just as Banks slowed down his chase.

Head coach Brian Daboll must move quickly and decisively to handle the threat that has been generated within the locker room by Banks’s repeated lack of effort. Otherwise, other players may take note of Banks’s periodic lack of effort and start doing the same.

Daboll doesn’t need the team’s lack of effort from a locker room that is now struggling to turn things around as the season winds down.

“Clearly, we want maximum effort on every play,” Daboll stated, attempting to minimize the event. Again, we have taken care of that. We will keep working on it till it’s fixed.

Benching Banks for any amount of time—a quarter, half, or game—is the only surefire method to send the message.

It may seem excessive, but Daboll couldn’t afford for his other players to see Banks’s lack of hustle on tape; otherwise, they may start to believe that they, too, can get away with not giving it their all.

As expected, Daboll did not elaborate on the matter’s resolution, simply stating that it would be handled confidentially.

I mean no disrespect to Daboll, but because this is becoming a regular occurrence, the best way to address it is to send a message to the whole team—including Banks—by eliminating the one perk that players love more than anything else: game snaps.

Even if it’s just for a series, no self-proclaimed competitor enjoys sitting on the bench. However, even if it’s only for a portion of the game, denying that chance can serve to emphasize that certain moves require more work.

Given the team’s current situation, Daboll has good reason to be concerned. However, this is an issue that, in theory, might be resolved with some tough love.
