When the New York Mets were facing an uphill battle in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, Jesse Winker made a significant contribution to their victory. During the Mets’ victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citi Field on Friday, he contributed to the team’s success by going two for three with three runs scored and an RBI. This victory helped the Mets force a Game 6 matchup.

Carlos Mendoza, the manager of the Mets, responded to the question of who would be the designated hitter for the vital Game 6 that will take place on Sunday in Los Angeles by saying that “there’s a good chance” it will be Winker.

Given that the Dodgers will be playing the Mets’ left-handed starter Sean Manaea, Mendoza also mentioned that Winker’s position is contingent on the opponent they are facing. This is because the Dodgers will be using their bullpen.

Winker is more likely to be in the lineup than J.D. Martinez, who has a batting average of.222, an on-base percentage of.639, and seven strikeouts in 18 at-bats during this postseason. Every indication points to Winker being in the lineup either in the outfield or at DH.

During the month of October, Winker has been one of the most productive hitters for the Mets. He has hit.316/.519/.684 with a 1.203 on-base percentage, two home runs, and four runs batted in across nine games. His on base percentage, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage are all higher than those of the team’s other players, and his batting average is only second to Mark Vientos’.333.

During the trade deadline, Winker was acquired from the Washington Nationals in exchange for the seventeenth-ranked pitching prospect, Tyler Stuart. Given the impact that Winker has had in the postseason, this was perhaps the best move that President of Baseball Operations David Stearns made over the course of the season, second only to the acquisition of Ryne Stanek, who is a setup man.

In order for the Mets to even the series and force a seventh game, they need to pick up a victory on Sunday. New York has demonstrated resiliency throughout the entire year, and in order to maintain their existence, they will need to avoid being eliminated once more.
