Julian “Ju Ju” Lewis, a star quarterback for Carrollton (Ga.) High School, committed to Colorado on Thursday, setting off a chain reaction in the recruiting class of 2025. According to Notre Dame, Lewis was Auburn’s most sought-after target throughout the offseason. It seemed like he was almost guaranteed a spot in the class at the start of July. Regrettably, the parties were ultimately driven too far apart by a disagreement over a contract.

After some time had passed, Auburn chose to ditch Lewis in favor of exploring other quarterback prospects. Former Irish commit Deuce Knight and Texas commitment KJ Lacey were two of the signal callers who were part of the following wave of prospects. Shortly after Knight reciprocated the desire, he became the primary target.

Several months of dissatisfaction followed that initial interest. While he assured Notre Dame he was fully committed, Knight told Auburn an entirely different tale, demonstrating his chronic case of cold feet. The Irish staff swiftly recovered after the incident in October by trading for Blake Hebert, a former Clemson commit.

It’s amusing to speculate on what could have transpired had Lewis ultimately decided to transfer to Auburn. Although there is no assurance that he would have remained committed to them had the odds been in his favor, there is also no evidence to suggest that he would not have. Auburn would have refrained from pursuing Knight under such circumstances.

Even if the Tigers hadn’t pursued Knight, he still might not have made it into Notre Dame’s class. Programs like Georgia might have entered the race as well, and Ole Miss would still be present.
