A number of important players for the Boston Red Sox have been traded or released in recent seasons.

The Red Sox aren’t the only team that has a checkered history when it comes to free agency and trades; Boston shouldn’t be too hard on itself for losing Betts, Sale, and other guys they could have kept.
Conversely, the fact that the Red Sox (or rather, NESN) let play-by-play announcer Don Orsillo go is still hard to fathom. Orsillo was one of the most remarkable figures linked to the team in recent years.

While Dave O’Brien was controversially replaced by Orsillo in the booth beginning in 2016, Orsillo had been the announcer for Red Sox games from 2001 to 2015. (I don’t mean any disrespect to O’Brien; he’s fantastic).

Even after his split from NESN, broadcaster Rick Orsillo continued his stellar career, this time as the San Diego Padres’ voice.

As Orsillo eloquently recounted Jackson Merrill’s monumental walk-off home run against the New York Mets at Petco Park on Sunday, the baseball world was reminded of Orsillo’s magnificence.

The enthusiastic shout of “Merrill Madness!”, emitted by Orsillo’s voice when Merrill confidently came around first, was the perfect accompaniment to the boisterous stadium environment.

At least one fan of the Red Sox felt something throughout that joyful sporting event.

X user @johnlavelle413 bemoaned Orsillo’s departure from Fenway in a now-viral post that included the now-iconic call by Orsillo.

“Letting Don Orsillo leave was probably the Red Sox’s worst mistake in the last fifteen years,” the post stated.
