To make room on the 40-man roster for depth starter Cody Poteet, the club announced on Friday that they designated right-handed reliever Ron Marinaccio for designated hitter status.

Poteet was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by the Yankees after being recalled from the 60-day injured list. His rehab assignment had already finished. In 19.2 innings (six rehab starts) with Double-A Somerset and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Poteet has a 2.34 ERA and 22 strikeouts.

Not since June 12 has the 30-year-old made an appearance in a major league game with a right triceps strain. Nevertheless, Poteet’s performance in four starts for the Yankees this season was outstanding, boasting a 3-0 record, 2.14 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and thirteen strikeouts in twenty-one innings. Now that Poteet is out on the injured list, he could be available to help out in the postseason as a reliever, but that is still up in the air.

Marinaccio, on the other hand, had seen extensive action this season, going back and forth between Triple-A and the majors multiple times. In 2024, the 29-year-old threw 23.1 innings for the major leagues, recording an ERA of 3.86. After allowing four runs in two appearances upon his most recent recall on September 1st, the Yankees sent Marinaccio back down to the minors.

Marinaccio was a dependable reliever for the Yankees in 2022, going 44 innings and recording 56 strikeouts with a 2.05 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. In 2023, though, he had a rough season with a 3.99 ERA and was sent to the minors.

After the Yankees designated Marinaccio for assignment (DFA), competing teams have the option to claim him off waivers.
