It looks like the New York Mets will soon have a much-needed starting pitcher back in their lineup.

Ace starting pitcher Kodai Senga will make a rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on Saturday, manager Carlos Mendoza informed reporters prior to New York’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday.

Mendoza states that Senga’s rehab start with Syracuse will consist of one or two innings pitched with a pitch count of 30-35.

If everything goes according to plan, the Mets may activate Senga from the injured list for their final regular season series against the Brewers in Milwaukee on Friday.

Senga won’t be completely stretched out, but it is expected that he will return as a starter. If/when the ace returns, the Mets would have to platoon a lengthy reliever behind him.

Senga, who has only made one start this season, missed the first four months of the 2024 campaign due to inflammation in his triceps and a discomfort in his shoulder. After returning from the IL, the right-hander was sidelined on July 26 against the Braves in his only appearance of the season due to a high-grade calf injury.

Senga’s probable return to the rotation this season will undoubtedly be a much-needed addition for the Mets, who are trying to secure a National League Wild Card position.

With a two-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for third place and the tiebreaker over the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Mets started play on Friday night.
