Reports: New York Met’s Carlos Mendoza displays courageous approach by taking risk to strenghten roster via a blockbuster trade…..[Details in post]
`In the upcoming offseason, might the New York Mets sign a top starter available to them?
Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report stated that the Mets were the most likely team to acquire Baltimore Orioles pitcher Corbin Burnes during the upcoming summer.
According to Rymer’s most recent piece, Burnes and his agent Scott Boras are seeking a New York squad that meets all of their criteria. Having a strong squad and the financial wherewithal to sign contracts worthy of New York City are at the very top of that list.
The Mets’ front office is someone Burnes would know. While the Milwaukee Brewers picked the pitcher, David Stearns served in a similar capacity as president of baseball operations for the team. After six years with the Brewers, Burnes was moved to Baltimore during the summer. He earned the National League Cy Young Award in 2021.
For two of the last three years in a row, the Mets have led the majors in Opening Day payroll. Even though they are no longer with the team, top pitchers Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer received enormous contracts worth over $920 million from Cohen during that time.
The 29-year-old Burnes has been instrumental in the Orioles’ dominant record this season, helping them to the top of the American League. After 28 starts, Burnes has a record of 13-7, an ERA of 3.19, and a WHIP of 1.13. Even if there have been whispers that Gerrit Cole may opt out of his current deal, he would still be the top pitcher to hit free agency in 2025.
With the exception of starting pitchers Jose Quintana and Luis Severino, who are only signed for this season, the Mets may see as much as $175 million disappear from their books next year. Even Sean Manaea, who is now under contract with the Mets, is rumored to be testing the waters of free agency.
Even though Juan Soto, the most desirable free agent of the 2025 class, is sure to be a target for the Mets and other clubs, Burnes would be a great addition to their roster in the event that they are unsuccessful in acquiring the Yankees’ outfielder.
