ESPN Reports: New York Mets sign a 7-time All-Star ahead of the Yankees to replace Pete Alonso……

Thus far, the New York Yankees and New York Mets undoubtedly have had an intertwined offseason.

Mets tabbed 'heavy favorites' to land $174M superstar with Yankees out of running image

It all results from the Mets grabbing Juan Soto from the Yankees in free agency. The Yankees have been in scrambles ever since, making more major moves than any other team to offset the loss of a great player. Max Fried formally signs his contract with Yankees.

Following their already-landed Max Fried, Devin Williams, and Cody Bellinger, the Yankees signed Paul Goldschmidt on Saturday as their new first baseman. The seven-time All-Star is trying to recreate his old magic in the Bronx, but his signing could have more effects.

Now, owing to the Goldschmidt signing, the Mets might have paved a road to bring back a superstar as one MLB writer intimated Saturday.

The Yankees’ signing of Goldschmidt made the Mets the “heavy favorites” to re-sign first baseman Pete Alonso, who has made four All-Star teams of his own in a Mets uniform, per Zach Pressnell of FanSided.

“At this point in time, the Mets should be seen as rather heavy favorites to land Alonso this winter,” Pressnell remarked. “The Polar Bear will head back to Queens in the next weeks unless the Nationals or Mariners are ready to commit near $200 million.”

“That qualifies the Mets as the top winners from the Goldschmidt signing. The Yankees are finding ways to help their cross-town rivals even as they are recruiting their own stars.”

Using Spotrac’s Market Value tool, Alonso is expected for a six-year, $174 million contract. Depending on how Alonso’s market performs, this number might rise or fall; thus yet, no team has shown any indication of being ready to approach that $200 million threshold.

Denying that the Yankees backing out of the first base market allows the Mets to grab Alonso seems difficult. But nothing is done until pen is put in writing.
