Analysis on Shaquille Leonard’s Waiver by the Indianapolis Colts

After five and a half years in the organization, Shaquille Leonard, selected by the Indianapolis Colts in the second round of the 2018 draft, announced his resignation. After suffering nerve damage in both his back and ankle after back surgery, the four-time Pro Bowler and former All-Pro Leonard had been slowly making his way back to full health for nearly a year. Leonard was able to get back to his old self because the Colts were patient with him. After his stay in Indianapolis, Leonard took to social media to express his gratitude to his followers.

Starting in June of 2022, Leonard underwent back surgery for the second time in November of the same year. Because of this, the Colts were hesitant to rush Leonard back into action when he underwent a second operation last season. Even while his playing time remained stagnant throughout the season, Leonard eventually voiced his dissatisfaction with the situation publicly. Leonard was waived due to the team’s choice and his emotions, even though he wanted to play and play well.

Shaquille Leonard, who played defensive linebacker for the Indianapolis Colts in the past, has had a rough go of it this year. Not only has he never played zone defense before, but his overall grade for 2023 was also his lowest. Leonard has failed to force a turnover throughout the season due to his incompatibility with defensive coordinator Gus Bradley’s scheme. His career-low 70% playing time is accompanied by 65 tackles and two tackles for loss in nine games. Leonard was waived by the Colts because of his dissatisfaction with Bradley and his deteriorating performance. It was a collective decision; Leonard had no say in the matter. Along with Franklin, Speed will most likely start in Leonard’s place. The impression that Leonard made on both the community and the team during his time as a Colt will go on long after he has left. His legion of devoted followers will keep hoping he may rediscover his legendary status as The Maniac.
