Elite UNC Basketball Target Goes Off Against Tar Heel Signee

Derek Dixon, a four-star guard from Gonzaga College High School in Washington, District of Columbia, was the first 2025 player to commit to competing for the Tar Heels.

On Monday evening, the backcourt sensations and their respective great prep teams competed against one another in the nation’s capital with the ultimate goal of winning the conference championship.

Smith and the Paul VI Panthers emerged victorious with a score of 58-54, bringing their overall record for the season to 26-5. Meanwhile, Dixon and the Gonzaga Eagles finished the season with a score of 26-5.

With a total of 29 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals, Smith demonstrated his versatility, agility, and competitiveness on both sides of the court while playing in a hostile environment away from home.

As reported by High School Top Recruits, Duke, Kentucky, and Georgetown have just visited Smith in order to meet with him.

However, the Tar Heels have been actively pursuing the athlete, who stands 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds, ever since they made an offer to him in late July.

On the 247Sports 2026 Composite, he is ranked fifth overall, second among shooting guards, and first in Virginia. He is also ranked first in the state of Virginia.

In the meanwhile, Dixon, who stands at a height of 6 feet 3 inches and weighs 190 pounds, is currently ranked 46th on the 247Sports 2025 Composite. He is one of three UNC basketball recruiting awards that he has won during his cycle.

Dixon’s commitment was made in late September, and it was quickly followed by another potential early Tar Heel signee, Isaiah Denis, a four-star guard from Davidson Day School in North Carolina, and, most recently, in late January, Caleb Wilson, a five-star forward from Holy Innocents Episcopal School in Georgia who was named a McDonald’s All American.
