All throughout the nation, high school football playoffs are about to begin. Here is a rundown of the top 20 running backs in the country this year, now that the majority of the season is over.
The main indicators were the team’s and production’s performance in 2024 in relation to the schedule’s strength. Previous season’s performance and recruitment achievements were also considered. Unless otherwise noted, all recruiting data is sourced from 247Sports.
This is an alphabetical list of the top twenty high school football running backs.
Cole Allen – Newfoundland (Canada) — Although the majority of the players on this list are slated to start for Power-4 teams, Sr. Allen—who is committed to Harvard—had a historic season. In just 10 games, he racked up 2,588 yards and 42 touchdowns on 10.4 yards per carry while also catching 19 catches for 374 yards and five additional scores. He also threw a touchdown pass, for a total offense of 2,964 yards, all while playing against strong Texas opponents. With kick returns included, Allen accumulated 3,130 yards on offense and defense. Even in St. John’s defeats, he averaged more than 250 points per game, for a total of 313 points per game.
Harlem Berry – St. Martin’s Episcopal (LA) – Sr.
Berry, a 5-star recruit to LSU and the nation’s top-ranked senior running back, has rushed for 8,000 yards in his career. He had an impressive regular season, rushing for 1,666 yards and 32 touchdowns on 12.7 yards per run. He also receptions for 247 yards and three more scores, building on his nearly 2,500 yards of offense from the previous year. As far as running backs go, Berry is as quick as they come with a 4.37 second 40-yard dash.
Atascocita, Texas, resident Tory Blaylock, Sr.
Blaylock was recruited by over 40 colleges, and it’s easy to understand why. He has a solid 10.62 second 100-meter dash, good size, and the ability to catch passes. In the same vein, his high school play is also quite good. Even though he missed some time with an injury, Blaylock still managed to run for 1,076 yards and 21 touchdowns as a senior on a top-20 team that played a national schedule. His average per carry was 9.5 yards. With his flying skills out of the slot, the Oklahoma commit has added 19 receptions for 265 yards and three touchdowns, and he has helped free up room for run-centric quarterback Cardae Mack.
Ezavier Crowell – Booneville, Alabama — So.
Statistically speaking, he is the best running back in the Class of 2027 and a 5-star recruit. As a rookie, Crowell carried for 1,737 yards and 29 touchdowns; this year, he has run for 1,667 yards and 25 touchdowns (11.7 yds/carry), in addition to two receiving scores and 233 yards. His Aggies had an impressive 21-1 record. Their lone loss was to Saraland, a nationally-ranked team, but he still managed 200 yards and three touchdowns in that game. Crowell has received 22 offers so far, with 247Sports putting Alabama, Auburn, and UCF in the lead.
Liberty Christian (VA) alum Gideon Davidson, Sr.
His rushing stats of 4,315 yards and 71 touchdowns (and counting) have helped lead the Davidson Bulldogs to a 26-0 record over the past two seasons. Davidson has a solid build for a tailback at 6-0,195, but he’s a speedster with a 100-meter personal best of 10.69. His commitment to Clemson and his third-place ranking in his class for 2025 are both easily apparent.
