The Indianapolis Colts are getting over a crushing 24-6 loss to the Detroit Lions. Because Anthony Richardson’s supporting group, particularly the offensive line, lacked consistency, Indianapolis didn’t appear to get any offensive traction. Due to a gassed defense in the later part of the game, Detroit was able to finish the game with big plays. Bradley Locker explores a move that every AFC team wishes they had taken prior to the 2024 season in a recent piece for Pro Football Focus. For Indianapolis, defensive interior depth is crucial.

With a 74.2 PFF pass-rushing grade in his first season, Laiatu Latu has performed admirably. However, considering the inefficiency of Taven Bryan and Raekwon Davis, the Colts might have wished to add more depth in their interior. It could have been beneficial to add Leonard Taylor III (75.5 PFF pass-rushing grade) or choose a player like T’Vondre Sweat (72.2 PFF overall rating).Bradley Locker | Focus on Pro Football
The Colts believed that bringing back Taven Bryan and signing free agent Raekwon Davis would provide depth, even though Indianapolis needed a pass-catcher after selecting Laiatu Latu (AD Mitchell, 52nd overall). Bryan, on the other hand, has performed poorly versus the run, recorded a PFF grade of 54.6 on 149 running snaps. Bryan isn’t much of a threat even as a depth player, despite being a better pass-rusher (66.7). Although Davis was expected to be a welcome change of pace behind DeForest Buckner and Grover Stewart, the Colts were aware of what they were getting with Bryan. Unfortunately, the reverse has occurred.

With 41.0 against the run and 38.4 overall defensive, Davis has terrible metrics according PFF and has played 280 total snaps. We’ll see if the former Miami Dolphins defender can finish stronger than he started because he has a two-year, $14 million contract with the Colts (Over the Cap). Davis needs to produce more for Indianapolis. Bryan is a step up from Davis at this point in the season, even though he isn’t much better.

The struggling New England Patriots (3-9) will be the Colts’ next opponent at Foxborough after they have completed the challenging portion of their 2024 campaign. Stalwarts Buckner and Stewart aren’t being helped by the depth of defensive tackles, but Sunday’s loss to Detroit was more about the offense disintegrating behind Richardson. The defensive trenches must provide the stars with better assistance than we’ve seen in the first 12 games of the season because every game that lies ahead is a “must-win” for the Colts.
